Let's see... Well, 4th of July was uneventful. In the past we have gone out to my Aunt's and watched the fire works over Gull Lake from her neighbor's lawn across the street. But with Uncle Al's terminal brain cancer this year that just wasn't happening. Rick and I set a few fire works off in the driveway which was pretty fun. He got some pretty large ones, but nothing too large and nothing illegal - which in Michigan means nothing can leave the ground. He thinks I had an anal childhood because I told him that all we usually got to do at Grandma's cabin was light sparklers and then we HAD to have a metal bucket full of water to put them in after they burned out. *laughs* I suppose I *DID* have an anal childhood - but only severely so when I was at Grandma Nichols - she's a little uptight at times.
It was nice having a long weekend but after observing the 4th on the 5th I came back to the 4 day work week from hell. It was crazy, busy around here last week - which had a lot to do with Tara being off on vacation and helping to cover for her. I felt extremely overwhelmed all last week and just frazzled in general. It's good to have Tara back today! :o)
I had intended to catch up on all my reading on LJ on Saturday since Rick had to work but I ended up spending the day with my mother and brother. Mom and I went out to Edward's library (he's the director) which is the first time I've been there since he started the job a few months ago. They were having a public safety day with demonstrations by the fire department etc. I saw a car get turned into a convertible which was
pretty neat. And the med-vac helicopter was there too. Got to see it take off which was a treat and rather windy. :o)
After that we all went to lunch and then swung by my Aunt & Uncle's place for a brief visit. That was the first time I have seen my uncle since he started on chemo. He does NOT look well. He doesn't really even look like himself. *sighs*
Nathan, my cousin's little boy, was spending the day with Grandpa & Grandma and he is quite adorable. He had this little plastic tricycle and a dog leash and he was trying to pull the big boat trailer with it. Needless to say he didn't get anywhere...but he kept trying for some time and it kept him well occupied and was cute. :o)
We only stayed there for 45 minutes or so and then went on to Grandma's cabin on the other side of the lake. My Aunt & Uncle from Minnesota were in town visiting her so I saw them. Also saw....I want to say she's my 2nd cousin once removed if I'm thinking about that right....Marty. My mom and Marty talked up a storm. Marty's mother and my mom's father were first cousins. Went swimming, got some sun, got sun-burnt on my shoulders - oops. At least I'm not completely deathly pale white anymore...of course part of me rather pink now.
Saturday night Rick and I went up to Hastings. There isn't much in Hastings, but it's where my brother is at for the time being. Oh, yeah, I haven't updated since my Grandma kicked my brother out of her cabin where he was staying with her. They had some kind of argument which was precipitated by the fact that my brother popped some popcorn and didn't offer her any.
Most people would just ask for some, but my Grandma knocked his bowl out of his hand and threw a fit. Please understand - Grandma, while she was never the stereotypical warm and loving Grandma you see in ads for baking products, has not been herself since her stroke last August. She has outbursts occasionally.
Well, my brother is kind of stubborn too so he didn't exactly let Grandma get away with that kind of behavior or back down ... now he's staying in a motel until he can move into his house which he closed on this past Friday. So as I was saying, spent the evening up in Hastings at his little postage stamp of a place just hanging out. It's a bad place for a couple of weeks - it has a full kitchen and dishes etc. We watched VH1's 50 most awesomely bad songs or something like that. I don't know who came up with that list but most of the songs on it we all kept saying things like "But I LOVE that song - that song rocks." Some people just refuse to take the 80s in context I think. :)
I also rented several DVDs this weekend but I think I will cover that and Sunday in another post later. I need to grab some lunch.
